Yet these settlements offer qualities appreciated by their inhabitants; a loose and open urban fabric, green spaces, desert-quiet environment and a better air quality. Conversely, on the south and west side, the floor slabs project to generate outdoors spaces for the flats that are protected by a simple array of vertical piers, that in turn define distinct elevations to each side. The apartments are distributed along 4 bays in dual aspect typologies and thus cross-ventilated. The typologies are based on a basic enfilade of rooms, including two duplexes with gardens on the ground floor and larger penthouses with a more spacious living room and a terrace. The roof top of the building signals its presence by means of a collection of machines – potentially ensuring the building's self-sufficiency – that counterbalance its formal consistency. The&nbsp;façade is finished with a light render and filtered by vivid balustrades and curtains, which provide shading possibilities to each flat. In this context, the city of Izegem maneuvered an in-between solution, with the ambition to transform the former Strobbe factory into a prominent cultural facility, the old factory was allotted in 3 different parts: the main factory and its former administrative dependencies for a cultural venue, a corner to be developed into a private housing tower, and the current parking to be transformed into guiding both the organization of the interior as well as arranging the exterior, relating the different buildings by means of distance and proximity instead of dubious juxtaposition. In a categorical move, the main factory is cut off into a square surface, separating from the new developments, and achieving a compact and efficient structure. This structural strategy preserves the interior structure of columns and only requires reinforcement of the perimetral ones, that provide in turn enough support for long span trusses, that at once provide an open-plan for the library on the upper floor. In a simple arrangement, the visitor enters the building from the newly resulting square, towards the entrance hall, and finds all the destinations available in a single glimpse. Multiple uses are found thus in a single building, that provides possibilities of exchange but also seclusion and privacy. Like so, a music academy, an arts school, the municipal archives and the city library coexist under a flexible yet simple building. Sustainability, urban integration, and a tight budget were mixed up in the equation. The demolition of the existing structure however proved a more sustainable choice since its removal would enhance the interior building block's conditions and make space for a more resilient architecture proposal. The result, a design that reorganises the plot to enable a double-mirrored structure with an atrium in between and a new garden at the back of the plot. The plot faces a difficult constraint due to a flanking access road that reduces the effective width façade of the building. Like the few other available plots, our plot is limited by hedging plants, nursing trees and a stream. In these conditions, the building had almost no choice but to fit in the leftover end of the plot awkwardly: an advantageous position however that grants it autonomy and good relation with the landscape. With a single tilted roof, the appearance of the building constantly changes, appearing grand towards the welcoming area and fading away towards the stream. The interior follows an open floor plan, with all-around unrestricted views, only interrupted by a large curved wall in the middle that defines two separate rooms. The forward-thinking structural design of the building – a series of large-span reinforced concrete beams spanning the entire depth of the apartment – allowed for the total removal of the original partition walls, creating a relative tabula rasa. The shafts were respected allocating the necessary infrastructure (kitchen, toilet and bathroom) attached to them. Siting on the edge of the village, it overlooks the Durme river and protects the access to a natural reservoir of 14 ha. In it, the town wished to develop a social housing scheme with the ambition to both preserve the environment and provide highly qualitative living units. The project provides 16 housing units organised in 2 compact and elongated buildings that define an open central garden. The implementation is an attempt to relate to the site’s representative fields, underlining the linear paths that structure the land, and to provide a domestic natural environment for its inhabitants. The row-houses, grounded to the garden, enjoy a more direct use of the exterior space with a frontal relation to the garden. Differently, the duplex apartments define a line in the rural fields, incorporating by means of a large opening the broad landscape into the double-height living spaces. The project site is one such space, partially enclosed by neighboring buildings, offering a tranquil and intimate setting perfect for a community garden. This project encompasses the creation of a garden, community facilities, and shared working spaces. The design consolidates the rear section of the plot by attaching a series of architectural units to the existing structure. The new units are seamlessly integrated into a unified backdrop, where the garden extends continuously along the party walls and facades facing the street.
